Izz al-Din Salim | Biography and Works

Izz al-Din Salim was the name by which Abdelzahra Othman Mohammed became widely known. He was born in 1943 in the Al-Huwayr area near Basra in southern Iraq. He grew up in a religious and community environment that shaped his intellectual and educational interests. As an author and educator, he wrote on Islamic thought, prophetic and Imami biographies, history, social questions and politics.

Salim participated in Islamic and political opposition to Ba'ath Party rule and faced imprisonment and persecution. He spent years outside Iraq, working with Iraqi opposition organisations and contributing to their cultural and media activities. He adopted the name Izz al-Din Salim in the circumstances of clandestine political work and exile.

He returned to Iraq in 2003, joined the Iraqi Governing Council and served as its rotating president in May 2004. Among his stated political aims was the creation of a state founded on citizenship, justice and respect for human dignity. He was killed in a car bombing in Baghdad on 17 May 2004. This profile brings together his life and works while distinguishing original Arabic editions from translations that are still awaiting editorial review.
